If you find the information that this was written by a naked man hilarious, then you'll probably find the book funny. If, on the other hand, you respond to the information with a shrug and the thought that that must have been uncomfortable at times, you'll find the book similarly bemusing.
Conclusion: I Just Don't Get Douglas Adams, even when he isn't the one who wrote the book.
It was a much better video game. I found the novel to be poorly written, and I'm a huge Douglas Adams fan. Terry Jones should stick to just being naked.

No, still haven't seen Planet of the Dead. The trouble with an Easter special is that it comes out at Easter--and at a liturgical church, there are other things to do.

Thing about Douglas Adams (When he is writing his books) is that I usually laugh hysterically through the first chapter & then start demanding a plot.
Starship had a plot (kind of), but I didn't laugh through the first chapter--or any of the following ones, either. Guess I'm hard to please.
You would most likely enjoy Last Chance to See. It's a lovely collection of pieces about real endangered species; once unburdened of any plot expectation, you'd probably find it quite enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Planet of the Dead, better than I thought I would, but I'm a sucker for the rekindled use of UNIT as a plot device. Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart was one of my favorite "old" Doctor Who characters.
Anyway, with UNIT, a comic relief scientist character, and aliens so phony-looking you could smell the latex, it actually almost FELT like an old episode.
That does sound good. I've seen a couple episodes with the Brigadier & he is a memorable, likable character.
ReplyDeleteThough, come to think of it, the Doctor was *most* unfair to Harriet Jones--the Brig got to destroy another species with no more than a sad comment. She blew up an invading spaceship (Ok, it was leaving, but, seriously, just how trustworthy were these guys?) and the Doctor ruined her career & robbed Britain of its Golden Age.
Good point, although let's rememeber, different Doctor, different times. Remember later in that season, in the excellent episode where he runs into Sarah Jane again at the highschool He threatens the aliens of that episode that if he doesn't like their plans they will stop. "I'm so old now. I used to have so much mercy."
