I just finished listening to Justinian's Flea (a bit uneven at points, but quite interesting) and now I'm curious all over again about what was going on during that time period (Roughly 480-580 AD). In particular, Rosan mentions Shah Khusro Anushirvan as being very like Justinian. So, now I'm starting a hunt for good books about him and also about China during the same time.
Also, I know better, really I do, but I keep falling into the trap of thinking of the "ancient people" as being completely isolated. They weren't, of course they weren't. Constantinople was trading quite merrily with China.
Any suggestions?
Sadly I never heard of Khusro or Khosrau but reading about him on a Wiki page I found a peace treaty between him and Justinian. Fabulously it begins Through the pass at the place called Tzon and through the Caspian Gates.... That's not a peace treaty. That's poetry.
